Golden light spilled across cobbled streets as Lisbon slowly revealed itself, beginning with quiet tram lines stretching between pastel-coloured buildings and wrought-iron balconies overhead. Soon, the iconic red tram rattled past, carrying stories through the hills before opening out into the grandeur of Praça do Comércio, where the Arco da Rua Augusta stood proudly beneath a wide blue sky. As evening approached, the city softened; rooftops blushed under twilight while São Jorge Castle watched from above, its silhouette guarding the maze of terracotta homes below. Night then carried me higher to the glowing platforms of the Santa Justa Lift, where warm lights flickered against the deep indigo sky and the city shimmered beneath the stars. The journey concluded in Belém, standing before the Monument to the Discoveries and the ornate Jerónimos Monastery, where Portugal’s seafaring past is carved into stone an ending that felt both reflective and timeless.
Atlantic winds greeted me as Madeira unfolded in layers of green terraces and whitewashed homes cascading toward the harbour of Funchal. The journey began along the marina, where fishing boats and a proud Portuguese flag framed the city against steep mountains dotted with endless rooftops. Climbing higher, the island revealed its dramatic coastline cliffs plunging into deep blue waters, villages clinging to volcanic rock, and winding roads tracing the edge of the sea. In Câmara de Lobos, colourful boats rested in the sheltered bay beneath bright skies streaked with soft clouds, while further along the headlands the ocean crashed against rugged black stone. As the day stretched on, I stood above sheer precipices where farmland patchworked the cliffs and the horizon seemed infinite, the vast Atlantic merging with the sky an ending that felt both humbling and exhilarating, wrapped in Madeira’s raw natural beauty.
Beneath bright blue skies and drifting clouds, Porto introduced itself through colourful tiled façades and narrow cobbled streets that felt effortlessly timeless. Wandering onward, the ornate Clérigos Tower rose dramatically above the rooftops, followed by the intricate baroque details of Igreja do Carmo, its stonework glowing softly in the afternoon light. As the day unfolded, the city opened out along the Douro River, where boats drifted past terracotta roofs and hillside houses layered one upon another. Dusk then transformed the scene Dom Luís I Bridge shimmered with golden lights as silhouettes crossed its iron arches, and finally the sky ignited in deep crimson and violet hues, reflecting across the river and bathing Porto in a warm, unforgettable glow.
High above the forested hills, Sintra first revealed itself in bursts of colour and fantasy, with the vivid yellows and reds of Pena Palace rising against a sweeping blue sky. Moving along its terraces and turrets, intricate stone archways and patterned tiles framed views that stretched endlessly across the countryside. As the afternoon deepened, the landscape shifted to golden hues, and from the castle walls the sun began its slow descent, casting warm light over rolling greenery and distant villages below. The journey then turned mysterious inside the Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira, where spiralling stone staircases drew the eye upward toward a circle of glowing light. Finally, wandering through lush gardens and past the ornate façade of the palace itself, Sintra felt like stepping through chapters of a fairytale each scene unfolding more enchanting than the last.
